Tipping & Gratuity for Event Bartenders and Private Party Servers in Ontario
Hosts booking private servers or bartenders for the first time often ask how gratuity works for hourly event staff. Unlike a restaurant bill based on food and drink totals, hourly staffing is billed by shift hours. Here is how Toronto and Ontario hosts typically handle tipping.
1. No tip jars at private dinners, weddings or corporate events
At a private dinner party, wedding or corporate reception, guests should never feel expected to pull out cash at the bar. Unless a host specifically asks otherwise, professional event bartenders do not put out a tip jar. Any gratuity is handled directly by the host if they choose to give one.
2. How hosts calculate gratuity (when they choose to tip)
Tipping is always at the host's discretion based on the quality of service. When hosts choose to tip their crew, they usually do it in one of two ways:
- A flat amount per staff member: Commonly $25 to $60+ per server or bartender for a standard 4 to 6 hour shift, or more for a long wedding or multi-course dinner.
- A percentage of the staffing invoice: Typically 10% to 18% of the total hourly staffing cost, split evenly among the crew who worked the event.
3. Cash on the night vs. adding to the invoice
- Private hosts: Often hand cash in an envelope to the server, bartender or event captain at the end of the night, or ask to have it added to the final balance.
- Corporate & law firm bookings: Office managers and executive assistants usually prefer everything on a single consolidated invoice so it can be expensed cleanly without petty cash.
4. What is already covered in the hourly rate
At Ludify, hourly staffing starts at $35 per hour, and Tracy's quote lists the full hourly cost before you book, with no mandatory "automatic service fee" tacked onto the quote without your knowledge. If you would like gratuity included on a corporate or wedding invoice, just let us know when approving your quote.
